As noted in (Reason for Humaning), GENERATI addresses five broad areas ‘of’ humaning:
- INTENTION
- ATTENTION
- ALIGNMENT
- CAPABILITY
- HELPING (COACHING)
Today, I’ll switch out COACHING for HELPING and after almost 40 years I’m ready to move on into HELPING.
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.” — George Bernard Shaw
For me, the distinction is vital as everything we have done — until now — has been defined through a coaching/leader lens. While coaching is ‘a’ cornerstone of leaderwork, helping is going to usurp coaching into a subset such as we have done with learning, growth, and development, and many other functions that are necessary.
GENERATI is HELPING.
HELPING is an additionally complex category of leaderwork and encompasses:
- Cuing
- Scaffolding
- Supporting
- Lifting
- Protecting
- Guiding
- Reaching Out
- Helping People Have Lives
Of course…
We are engaged in all of these processes in one particular density and frequency (developmental scaling) — largely and most often — unconsciously!
I’ve noticed in codifying my own model of helping (thx Grady McGonagill) over the past 4 decades, the labels have emerged as a Teachable Point of View (TPOV).
Labels have become ‘helpful’…
I’ve included a chapter in my forthcoming book where I define them and make them distinctly related to a journey of consciousness led by self-awareness.
I was amazed it took the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) so long to elevate SELF-AWARENESS to the top of their leaderboard lately.
A group at Stanford (Business Advisory Council, I believe) indicated Self-Awareness was at the top of their leaderboard back in the 1990s.
To segue, being aware of helping functions consciously promotes a wholly different type of interaction towards helping.
It’s going to call forth ideas which cause us to listen and hear differently, which is the theme, so to speak, of the book whose title is in flux but coming out in soft launch October 2024 @ leadu.com/news if you’re interested.
I intend to unpack it along the way and it’s clearly complex to do so — we will see how we do.
